**Discontinued** was last offered Summer 2008Discontinued Last Updated: 23-NOV-2007 This course examines and critically analyses the milestones in the development of Federal Indian Policy and legislation in Canada. Emphasis is on the emergence of "modern policy" from 1969 to the present. Current issues and future challenges for First Nations are explored, taking into account the current fiscal and policy environment, and such measures as devolution, off-loading, and expenditure reduction. Federal objectives are contrasted with the consistent efforts of Aboriginal peoples to influence the policy development process and assert their rights and interests.
